Earlier this year, I had a crazy idea.
I was looking around for a big goal to set for myself to help motivate me to get in shape. Ironman came to mind and stuck there for a long while. I did some research to find out if people can actually train for a race in two or three years and wouldn’t you know it, I was not the first person to have this couch potato to triathlete idea. I found quite a few stories of folks who worked hard and got it done. Thus, my mind was made up and a goal was set.
I’m aiming to complete an Ironman race before I turn 30, which is just over 2 years from now. That means a race date sometime in summer/fall of 2012.
Is that time line short? Yes! Am I still going for it? Hell yes!
I won’t be breaking any records, but I will finish.
I’ve been working primarily on running. I’m really just getting started, but making steady progress. I’m down about 25 pounds since this whole thing started and it continues to go. My nutrition needs some serious work, but again, I’m making some progress.
In the short term, I plan to run in the big Race Weekend we have here in Ottawa every year. I’m going to try for a half marathon, maybe, if not the 10k at least. That takes place at the end of May.
I really do have a long way to go to hit my target, there’s no question, but I’m determined to get there. I’ve been out of shape and thoroughly unhappy about it for way too long.
It’s time for a change, and one crazy idea was just what I needed to get the ball rolling.
